Chapter Seven

The cafe was empty for most of the afternoon. There were only a few customers who stopped by for take-out coffee and one businessman who came to use the WiFi. He sat alone at a table typing, so most of Riley’s shift was spent cleaning behind the counter.

Scott’s annoying words echoed throughout Riley’s head, making it difficult to concentrate.

She needed to have a talk with Scott about staying out of her business. He wasn’t her father. He didn’t have any right to tell her what to do.

Riley received a text message from Elijah towards the end of her shift.

Hey, Elijah wrote. It was great spending time with you and Ryan today. I hope that I can see you both again soon.

His words brought a small smile to Riley’s face. She re-read the message several times.

Ask him what he's really doing out here, echoed Scott's words in her head.

Riley tried to push them back down into the depths of her mind, but they kept echoing back.

Ask him. Ask him. Ask him.

At least it would give her a reason to meet Elijah again.

Hey, Riley slowly typed back. Are you free tonight or tomorrow? I’d like to meet you alone to talk more about Ryan.

She sent the message, then slipped her phone back in her pocket.

It vibrated five minutes later.

I’m free tonight, Elijah wrote. I’ll come pick you up after your shift ends.

Great, Riley wrote back. I’ll be outside waiting at five.

Great. See you then, he wrote back.

Riley placed her phone down on the counter so that she wouldn’t be tempted to keep looking at it.

Tonight she’d confront Elijah and prove to Scott that he was wrong.
